![]() All of a sudden, my previous skills were almost nonexistent, and I had to learn the game all over again. When Guitar Hero Live released with a six-button instrument instead of the classic 5-button layout, it rocked my world. Not to toot my own horn, but I was pretty decent with a plastic guitar back in the day. The best analogy I can come up with is Guitar Hero. I’m almost required to relearn the game, but this isn’t a bad thing, honestly. The ball simply moves differently in a way I can’t explain. When pulling the plunger on some of my favorite titles, my timing was immediately off. As a guy who struggles to tell the difference between 30 frames per second and 60, I can’t quite put my finger on how this has affected my play, but it has. The newest client, which up till now had only been available on PC, boasts an updated physics engine in Unreal. The level of detail is still just as astounding as it was when I started my journey years ago. If that weren’t enough, each table has added animations that add to the experience in a way that’s simply not possible with a real table. Zen has perfected the art of digital ball physics in a way that will make your forget you’re playing on a screen. Pinball FX is still the unequivocally best place to play pinball without going to a physical arcade. I take serious issue, however, with the new pricing model, which feels like a slap in the face to diehard fans like myself. The new Pinball FX client isn’t perfect yet, but it’s still an outstanding product. Which is why this is one the hardest reviews I’ve ever had to write in all my years at attempting to be a legitimate games journalist. But my passion grew when I had unlimited quarters on my Xbox to hone my skills and compete more easily with friends. Sure, I played physical tables as a kid and had a blast. My love for the game grew because of Zen Studios. So hopefully you’ll indulge me one more time. Regardless, I’ve spent more hours playing digital pinball than any other game on any platform. You can even stream games to tablets, phones and laptops from Xbox locally or online now, making vertically tilted screens universally available for users of the platform.By this point, I’m borderline worried that listeners of our podcast or readers of my reviews are tired of hearing me talk about pinball. Sadly this feature was absent from PinballFX3 on Xbox, effectively making the Nintendo Switch version superior to the Xbox for that reason alone. Nothing feels better than to tilt the display into a vertical position to play pinball tables more in line with how they are physically constructed. Few things enhance this experience more than increased frame rate, and I expect it from a next-gen pinball game on current-gen consoles. ![]() Pinball is an in-the-moment experience of mechanical engineering and physics playing out. ![]() Not meaning to come off as arrogant, there are two features in particular that I expect from a next-gen pinball game release where you essentially have to re-purchase old tables if you want to play them in the new engine/wrapping, from what I understand.Īlmost no game type relies more on perfectly timed responses and reaction time than pinball. I also have Pinball FX3 on Switch, although I only tested it with the included free tables. I’ve also bought some tables for Zen Pinball on iOS/Apple TV. Background: I’ve bought probably about half the tables available on PinballFX3 on Xbox One, and before that even some tables for Pinball FX2 on Xbox 360. ![]()
